General Statement The Department of Microbiology & Cell Biology (MCB) has strong research programs in cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, microbial pathogenesis, and cell biology supported by state-of-the-art core facilities. Pathogen-containment facilities that accommodate small (BSL-3 & BSL-2) and large (ABSL-2) animal research are also available. The Department is part of the College of Agriculture and is a component of the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES). MCB is the primary department at MSU providing pre-medical and pre-veterinary training. The department is home to the Montana Medical Laboratory Science Professional Program, and our faculty participate in both the WWAMI Medical Education Program and the Montana Veterinary Medicine Program (MVMP). The department contributes significantly to MSU’s Center for Biofilm Engineering. Duties and Responsibilities General & Supervision Communicate directly with the JFL Director weekly at minimum to coordinate research, teaching, and discuss any potential areas of concern with livestock and personnel. Create/maintain a herd management and nutrition plan for each animal species. Update as needed due to factors such as environmental variation, pregnancy, ect. Schedule initial and reoccurring vaccinations, vet appointments, and manage animal related emergencies in coordination with director. Maintain detailed health and medical treatment records for each animal. Assess the health of the livestock including while under active research projects and monitor all behavioral and physiological responses from specific research procedures. Responsible for daily care and monitoring of all departmental livestock and large animals; assisting the research facility manager in the coordination and supervision of large animal research activities. Ensure research protocols are followed and/or modified. Implement, train, and ensure compliance of all protocols relating to large animal husbandry, and facility operation. Assist in the responsibilities of hiring, training, and supervision of all student employees in animal care duties. Responsible for coordination of use, maintenance, replacement and repair of equipment and facilities. Shared oversight with Research & Facility (R&F) Manager and Director of the large animal facilities budget including reviewing facilities services billing and expenditures. Compliance & Protocols Assist the Director and R&F Manager with ensuring all compliance issues identified through applicable oversight entities (IACUC, AACUC, IBC, USDA) are addressed with respect to the research program and the MVMP instructional program. Assist the Director to ensure all facilities meet Office of Research Compliance, various oversight committees, and USDA expectations, and the expectations associated with the national accreditation standards for the MVMP program and the Washington State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Assist the Director and lab teaching assistant to develop, maintain and ensure compliance of the MVMP specific procedure manual. Montana Veterinary Medicine Program Assist with MVMP operations/activities that require use of the Veterinary Clinic Building (VCB) and surrounding facility. Work with MVMP instructors for instructional activities in the VCB and animal enclosures, and assist in hands-on instruction within the MVMP program in multiple classes and situations. Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Must have hands on experience working with cattle, sheep, horses. Must have experience in the operation of farm machinery/equipment. Must have the ability to monitor the health of all livestock, including but not limited to the following: Ability to administer treatments by various routes, evaluate effectiveness of treatment. Perform research/medical procedures. evaluate livestock health records. Consults with veterinarian & have the ability to perform recommended procedures and directives. Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Laboratory animal or veterinary technician training. Practical knowledge of pasture management and crop production as a feed source. Know how to tube feed animals, ability to recognize and relieve bloat in ruminants. Experience with livestock record keeping programs. Experience in compliance issues, particularly in respect to the developing, implementation, training, and compliance of SOPS/Protocols for animal handling, husbandry, biosafety, and experimentation. Familiarity with breeding livestock including synchronization processes. Lambing and calving experience. The Successful Candidate Will Effective communication skills. Effective leadership/management skills. Ability to work non-typical hours as required for research and the MVMP program. Ability to work the necessary hours to successfully lamb or calve, including nightshifts, weekends, holidays, etc. Must be available after hours for livestock and/or facilities Emergencies. Position Special Requirements/Additional Information Physical Demands Outside work conditions in inclement weather. Exposure to chemicals, infectious agents, blood, dust, fumes, and animal dander. Repetitive heavy lifting (greater than 30 , machinery operation and the ability to operate farm equipment for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to wear required PPE for long durations of time such as PAPR’s, N-95 respirators, face masks, Tyvek suits, rubber boots, and gloves, and must have the ability to perform physical labor in such PPE.
