Over the course of six weeks, students are fully immersed in a summer experience that combines academic instruction, experiential learning opportunities, and swim lessons. Our program is rounded out by project-based learning that helps students to think critically, and a life skills curriculum aimed at growing social-emotional competencies.While many students lose 2-3 months of learning during the summer, students in our program have consistently gained math and reading skills each summer, increasing their preparedness to return to school in September. Nationally, 91% of Horizons students attend college or a post-secondary program.A longitudinal program, participants begin the program in PreKindergarten and return each year through eighth grade, creating an opportunity for deep, long-term relationships with students and their families. The Reading Specialist oversees all reading instruction, remediation, and advancement aspects of the Horizons program. S/he participates in the development of a summer reading plan and is responsible for implementing its goals and objectives in keeping with our strategic goals and Horizons National’s requirements. The ideal candidate will have experience as a PreK to Grade 8 reading specialist and literacy coach. We are looking for a talented, passionate, caring professional who will work collaboratively alongside an outstanding teaching team and administrative staff to fulfill the Horizons mission and create a fun, inclusive, inspiring, and educational summer experience for all Horizons students. The Literacy Specialist will work with lead and assistant teachers, other reading specialists, math specialist, family engagement specialist, and will be supported by the Program Directors. This is a summer position taking place from June 22 - July 31, 2026. Hours are Monday through Friday, 7:45 am to 3:30 pm. There are two required orientation days in June, with final dates TBD. The program takes place on the campus of Greene Street Friends School in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. Employee ClassificationTemporary/Seasonal Position Type/Work HoursFull or part-time/number of hours per week or work schedule Reports to: Program Directors Supervisory Responsibilities: None ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:The Literacy Specialist will: Assist the Executive Director and Program Directors as needed with Staff Training, regarding Literacy and all testing proceduresShare that all staff members are part of a team to teach Literacy, including Math, Science, Art, Music, P.E., Technology, Dance/Movement, and Counselors - Build Vocabulary for their subject area, for all grades, and work to assist students in comprehending related readings for their subject(s)Assists Director and/or Program Director in selecting and ordering reading materials pre-programWork with the Program Directors to coordinate and administer standardized pre- and post-assessments (STAR Reading and Math)Lead small group and individual literacy sessions with students each day, focused on site words, phonetics, fluency, and other reading competencies Identify students in need of additional support and develop intervention strategies; Work in small groups with students reading below grade level or needing additional servicesAssist Horizons teachers with reading materials for each classroomUtilize assessment data to determine appropriate student groupings, coordinated with grade-level teachers, and which students will receive supplemental reading assistanceCreate and coordinate a schedule for all Literacy services and instruction, in coordination with the Director and Program DirectorsDistribute assessment data/related groupings to Horizons teachers to assist with classroom assignmentsModel literacy instruction in classrooms (in total group direct instruction and small group settings)Evaluate assessment data at the conclusion of the summer program and assist the Program Director in providing the results to parents and the public schools from which the children come to Horizons Submit all required Horizons National documents and post-summer assessments results as neededParticipate as required in all Horizons National Literacy Specialist trainings and professional development (spring). Attend weekly faculty check-ins and scheduled trainings Participate in orientation and teacher work days to the start of the program to learn about norms, programming, and prepare classrooms for the summer Attend field trips and special programming as needed Take part in a post-program “de-brief” with the Director and others, as required, to help shape evolving program in a positive manner; Assist in evaluating program effectiveness (through surveys and feedback cycles)Maintain open dialogue and communication with the Executive Director as needed to accomplish goals and/or problem-solve In collaboration with the Executive Director, provide ongoing input into this job description as the position unfolds to keep this job description as accurate as possible. QUALIFICATIONS:The ideal candidate for the Literacy Specialist position must be flexible, well organized, capable of taking initiative, and full of enthusiasm for both teaching and learning. In addition to a strong commitment to Horizon’s mission, this position requires a balance of knowledge and practical experience with proficiency in the skills of literacy instruction, strategic communications, best practices for out-of-school-time academic enrichment programs, planning and coordination skills, leadership, and the ability to connect with Horizons’ colleagues, children, and families. Other desired qualifications are:3 or more years working as a Reading or Literacy Specialist or an elementary school teacherThorough understanding of best practices for reading instruction based on current researchAbility to teach all aspects of literacy: reading, writing, spelling, and speakingAbility to administer and interpret assessments and interventions, and group students for instruction based on the findings; share data with teaching staff and assist staff in gaining relevant insights about students.Bonus if Wilson certified Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times with or without accommodations.
