No County Oneida Street Address New York State School for the Deaf City Rome State NY Zip Code 13440 Duties Description The New York State Education Departmentu2019s (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates to fill an Interpreter (Sign Language) position at the New York State School for the Deaf. The incumbent of this position will be responsible to coordinate sign language interpreting services for individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing; and translate, communicate, and interpret from a verbal spoken language (i.e. English into American Sign Language (ASL) and from ASL into a verbal spoken language. Major responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:u2022 Facilitate all communication, spoken and signed between Deaf/hard of hearing students, Deaf staff, and hearing staff by using manual communication appropriate for learning level of student;u2022 Translate, edit, and proofread rules, regulations, and policy brochures and manuals for use by staff, students, and health care providers;u2022 Translate correspondence, letters, notes, and conversations between staff, students, and families; u2022 Tutor academic classes and lessons for staff, students, and families;u2022 Provide translation services related to student progress for IEPu2019s and evaluation tools;u2022 May use translation skills to assist people filling out applications, forms, and other documents;u2022 May interpret details of treatment, educational staff instructions for treatment planning, medication administration, and education to students, families, and caregivers. This may include translating and interpreting complex and confidential medical and mental health information; u2022 Communicate, interact, and work effectively and cooperatively with individuals from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds; and u2022 Perform related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have Certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID); OR a passing score on the written portion of the RID certification examination AND two years of experience providing sign language interpretive services; OR a rating of intermediate or above on the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview conducted by the national Technical Institute for the Deaf.It is essential that candidates clearly and concisely indicate exactly how they meet the above minimum qualifications in their resume. Failure to show how you meet the minimum qualifications above may result in disqualification and removal from consideration.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates who have: u2022 Experience understanding and interpreting K-12 subject matter;u2022 Experience working with special needs students particularly deaf or hard of hearing;u2022 Experience working with adults as part of a team. Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position will be a temporary appointment pending Civil Service Commission approval of the Non-Competitive Jurisdictional Class. At such time, this appointment will become Permanent, Non-Competitive. Promotions and transfers may change appointeesu2019 negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of Certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) or rating of intermediate or above on the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview conducted by the national Technical Institute for the Deaf will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicantu2019s expense. Fees associated with fingerprinting do not apply if applicantu2019s fingerprints exist in the NYS TEACH System. The work schedule for this position includes the hours of Monday through Friday 7:30amu20133:30pm.This position leads to a maximum salary of $68,630 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
