With an endowment of $500 million, AFHU raises approximately $60 million each year and plans to increase substantially its fundraising efforts. AFHU?s contribution is over half of the University?s overall fundraising goal. AFHU was founded in 1925 by American businessman and philanthropist Felix M. Warburg. Hebrew University of Jerusalem The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is consistently ranked as the top university in Israel and among the top 100 worldwide. The Role Based in Manhattan and reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, Beth McCoy, the Chief Development Officer will be a front-facing, active development professional who will lead a team of regional executive directors managing their own local staff and portfolios. The CDO will be responsible for managing and soliciting a portfolio of major and principal prospects and cultivating senior-level relationships with a variety of U.S. donors, including individuals, foundations, corporates, and other partners. They will also ensure that AFHU works collaboratively and openly with the Division of Advancement and External Relations at The Hebrew University. The Chief Development Officer will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the organization. S/he will execute the fundraising strategy for this dynamic and impactful organization, enabling AFHU to maintain its current level of excellence while driving the organization?s ambitious national fundraising plans. As a key member of the senior leadership team, the CDO must be able to forge collaborative relationships with the CEO, the national and regional boards, as well as with the operational, financial and technological leadership of the organization. The CDO will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive campaign infrastructure, strategy and plan to achieve AFHU?s national fundraising goals and objectives. On a day-to-day basis, the CDO will be responsible for leading the evolution and growth of the AFHU?s financial development efforts at a local and national level across all AFHU?s programs including principal and major gifts, planned giving, foundations and corporate giving, and events. S/he will manage, motivate, and retain the highly effective development team as well as encourage an environment of collaboration and sharing of best practices. Above all, s/he will have a strategic approach to revenue generation and must be able to deliver on agreed goals and commitments. In the past five years, AFHU has consistently increased its fundraising goals from $39.2 million per year to $62 million, which equates to a 50% increase. The Team The Chief Development Officer will lead a team of five executive directors based in Chicago, New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and San Francisco and will work alongside the National Director of Development based in Fort Lauderdale. AFHU?s CDO will oversee a team of 25 fundraising professionals located throughout the U.S. Fundraising at AFHU is separated into principal and leadership giving, major gifts, planned giving, foundation giving, missions to Israel, events and annual giving. These activities raised over $62 million in for FY ending September 2018. Candidate Profile The successful candidate will be an inspiring and engaging leader and manager with recognized fundraising skills, a knowledge of Israel, a genuine interest in higher education and research, and a commitment to the mission and values of AFHU. S/he will have previous experience fostering a culture of constructive dialogue and active collaboration between different constituencies, while understanding and respecting legacy and instituting a culture of partnership, transparency and teamwork. We are looking for an exceptional revenue generator and strategic thinker: someone with a track-record of meeting aggressive development goals as well as of proposing innovative and sustainable resourcegenerating ideas. The ideal candidate will be an innovative thinker with a sophisticated understanding of how to leverage the rich resources provided by HU to enhance development results and team performance. As such, the successful candidate will be results-oriented and creative in identifying new opportunities for revenue generation in an increasingly competitive fundraising environment. S/he must have the intellectual and professional sophistication to establish strong relationships with alumni and within the Hebrew University as well as with new partners from outside of the existing AFHU and HU communities. As a senior spokesperson for AFHU, the CDO must be an outstanding communicator with the stature, gravitas, and credibility to cultivate relationships at the highest levels across a variety of donors and partners.
