Founded in 2020, Life Science Cares San Diego (LSCSD) is a collective of local life sciences industry companies and professionals committed to impacting opportunity gaps in our community. Life Science Cares San Diego, like affiliates in Boston, San Francisco Bay Area, Philadelphia, and New York, enlists efforts of a critical mass of companies working in biotech, pharmaceuticals, medical technology, diagnostics, medical services, and research to engage and collaborate with local nonprofit partner organizations. In a city where over 600,000 residents are grappling with economic hardship, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, through Life Science Cares, San Diego's life science community extends its commitment to finding solutions to our community's most critical social challenges beyond its primary drive to advance human health. With a $2.5M operating budget, four dedicated employees, and over 8,000 volunteer hours deployed last year, we are providing human and financial resources to impactful nonprofit partner organizations throughout San Diego addressing three fundamental gaps: education, basic needs, and economic opportunity. Our programmatic arms provide: Grants: Advancing impact of carefully selected nonprofit partners in the areas of education, basic needs, and economic opportunity. Paid Internships: Project Onramp, exposing low-income college students to mentors and life-altering industry experiences. Volunteer Opportunities: Engaging Life Science professionals and their companies in thousands of hours of collective partnership with community nonprofits engaged in delivering community 2023, through a combination of strategic initiatives, partnerships, and volunteer engagement opportunities, LSCSD awarded over $1.2M in grants to local nonprofits, aided nearly 3,000 students with educational access, provided over 180,000 meals to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity, facilitated connections for over 3,000 under-resourced youth with professional opportunities in the life science industry and aided over 100 individuals with rental and housing support. In 2024, we aim to host over 150 volunteer events and grant over $1.8M to 20 nonprofit organizations. Through our collaborative and innovative mindset and entrepreneurial spirit, we are positioned to expand our impact by building upon our thriving programs, our growing foundation of support, and well-developed partnerships throughout the San Diego community. POSITION SUMMARYReporting to the Board of Managers and serving as a member of the National CEO's leadership team, the Executive Director will oversee Life Science Cares' mission and sustainability in San Diego. Responsibilities include managing a $2.5M budget, strategic and operational planning, program and organizational development, fundraising, and marketingpublic relations. This is a highly collaborative job, partnering with staff, the board, and community partners to diversify revenue, enhance programs, and increase impact. The ED will promote LSCSD through public events, public speaking, and social media, serving as a visionary and influential leader in the community, and on various boards and committees. They will oversee and mentor a team of three dedicated professionals, our Director of Programs & Community Engagement, Development Manager, and Project Onramp Manager. Priorities for this role include:Learn and understand the history of LSC both nationally and locally. Support the growth and sustainability of LSC San Diego through the creation and implementation of a comprehensive development strategy and operating plan. Enhance programs and activities by actively engaging with the community and building trusting relationships to strengthen connections with current and potential stakeholders throughout San Diego. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESWork closely with the Board of Managers to lead an annual strategic planning process that creates a foundation for growth and sustainability. Develop passionate and knowledgeable staff and board members to be effective organization ambassadors.Support a highly engaged board with effective governance practices and communicate effectively with the board for informed decision-making.Implement a comprehensive staff recruitment, engagement, and retention strategy, and ensure appropriate staffing and skill levels through all hiring and professional development activities.Maintain fiscal soundness through budget management and expenditure approval.Work with the National CEO and colleagues across LSC affiliates to create and implement organizational and administrative policies that ensure efficient use of resources, high-quality community investment, and overall operational effectiveness.Guide the development of performance management and reporting systems to set goals and measure outcomes for operational and programmatic excellence.Support the creation and execution of a multi-year development plan, to diversify revenue and increase industry philanthropic support.Promote industry volunteerism and community engagement to bolster support.
